Mountain Movie Clichés

Attention filmmakers: Enough with the clichéd time-lapse scenes of clouds whipping by mountain peaks! These are usually shot at dawn or sunset, so you get an alpenglow wash across the screen along with the cloudscape. How many mountain films open this way? Far too many. Yeah, we're in a dramatic mountain setting...we get it!

Cliché No. 2: Prayer flags snapping in the breeze.

Cliché No. 3: POV down a gaping crevasse while walking across a ladder in the Khumbu Ice Fall. Move on. We're so over it.

Got a mountain-movie peeve of your own? Share it in the comments.

You nailed the list pretty well so far (low hanging fruit). Others to consider:

Spinning prayer wheels, overuse of fisheye lens, filming a scene from a reflection of ski goggles or rear view mirrors, stupid zen/meditation scenes...

There are also alot of verbal cliches that just kill me:

-"...So stoked"
-"I don't even want to know what he'll be able to do in a few years."

Adventure photography has many more cliches than you can shake a stick at due to the poser factor.

some time ago, music used to be always the same in climbing movies and shows:

Pink Floyd (Shine on you crazy diamond)
Jean Michel Jarre (Oxygène)

and topping it all:
Richard Strauss - Also Sprach Zarathustra
when reaching the summit.

And--inclusive of all 'outdoor' commercials, movies, you name it--the ubiquitous screaming hawk noise! There seems to be only one recording, that's been used at least a jillion times.

Nothing tweaks me out more than scenes of people trying to send projects while screaming, screaching and grunting like they are constipated, passing kidney stones or dying. Enough with the screams and pitiful moans. It's like the louder you scream while you are trying to pull that move, the cooler the movie is. Let it go folks.....

How about the OLN-format film where a group of Americans that say "gnarly" and "rad" and "splitter" go to a foreign country, pick up a local who does the same sport only not quite as well, and ride a trail/ski some steeps/climb a rock/bag a first descent thru a canyon ? I've seen a dozen of these films and THEY ARE ALL THE SAME PLOT. zzzzz
